The brand new Monopoly: Lancaster Edition game was launched in style at the Ashton Memorial.

Mr Monopoly joined Lancaster mayor Coun Roger Dennison to celebrate the game going on sale on Tuesday morning.

Coun Dennison said: “I am thrilled that Lancaster has its very own version of such an iconic game and that many of Lancaster’s popular attractions and landmarks are being honoured on this unique board.

“I look forward to playing the game with my family and expect it will be more enjoyable than ever with the majority of the squares being so familiar and dear to us.”

Some of the charities and organisations who appear on the new Lancaster version of Monopoly celebrate the launch of the game along with mayor Roger Dennison and Mr Monopoly.

The game is themed in sets – from heritage to tourism, shopping to entertainment – and more.

The four train stations from the classic Monopoly proved a challenge for the makers as the city only has one mainline station.

In the end, the quartet of Monopoly prime estate take on a travel theme – so adding another theme to the sets.

In all, more than 30 Lancaster landmarks are being honoured on the board.

The Ashton Memorial gets to land on the top ‘Mayfair’ spot, while Lancaster Priory takes up occupancy on ‘Old Kent Road’ at the other end of the board.

In between are the “great and good” of the city, including Lancaster Castle, the City Museum, the Grand Theatre, Lancaster Music Festival and Lancaster Library.

Five charities also get to ‘Pass GO’ – St John’s Hospice, Team Reece, Animal Care, Lancaster Community Music Centre and The Olive Branch.

The Chance and Community Chest cards are customised, with one sending players back three spaces for ‘getting stuck in traffic on Skerton Bridge’ while another rewards players with the accolade of becoming ‘Mayor of Lancaster’ for the duration of the game.

The Guardian gets to land on the Fleet Street space from the classic London Monopoly original.

“We have been wonderfully spoiled for choices putting this game together,” said Ella Gibbs from Winning Moves UK, who have produced the board under license from leading toy and game company Hasbro.

Among those attending the launch was five-year-old Moorside Primary School pupil James Jones-Turner, who won a competition to meet Mr Monopoly.

For his winning entry, James wrote what he loved about Lancaster, saying: “Lancaster is a fun and exciting place to live. I love the library and all the coffee shops. It’s wonderful.”
