A BACKSTREET club in the centre of Morecambe will be transformed into a “Temple of Soul” this weekend – and hundreds of “worshippers” from all over the country are expected to descend.
The free North Lancs Soul Festival will attract fans of soul music to Smokey O’Connor’s from this Friday (May 20) to Sunday (May 22) for three days of listening and dancing to top DJs spinning their favourite soul tracks.
The festival, part of Morecambe’s Top 20 entertainment season, is organised by the town’s Seaside Soul Club, a group of soul enthusiasts formed in 2003.
The club’s Jason Mills thinks the event could bring in over 1,000 soul fans over three days, many of whom will come from out of town, and generate £100,000 for the local economy.
“If you want music that’s going to appeal to everyone, then that’s soul music,” said Jason.
“We don’t charge and everybody’s welcome.” Sean O’Connor, another organiser, said: “Everybody within the soul fraternity thinks it’s a fantastic festival and to many, it’s the highlight of their year.”
