Its thirty years since Frankie Goes To Hollywood released their seminal album ‘Welcome to the Pleasuredome’ which spawned their debut single ‘Relax.’

That track was banned by the BBC which seems amazing to believe now.

As usual when the spoil sports ban something, everyone becomes really interested in it and it becomes a massive hit. ‘Relax’ was a huge number one single.

The two follow up singles ‘Two Tribes’ and ‘The Power of Love’ also hit the top spot.

A lot has happened in the three decades since their domination of the charts.

The band split before the end of the 80s and frontman Holly Johnson went solo.

He released his last record in 1999 and then disappeared off the face of the earth.

Actually in that time Johnson went to art school – something he had intended to do years ago.

The success came and art school was put on the back burner.

Holly has finally got round to releasing a new album – his first in 15 years and is preparing to tour for the first time in over two decades.

I was delighted he popped into my show for a chat.

I asked him why he is choosing now to come back. “You could say it’s taken me 15 years to make this album. Over the past couple of years I’ve had an absolute determination to finish it.

“I needed to be reinvigorated and rebooted if you like.

“Going to art school allowed me to channel my creativity in other ways and I got the hunger again.

“Every record I’ve made there has been quite a bit of electronica on it and this is no different.

“I used vintage synths and some real instruments and it has produced a really interesting sound.”

I had to touch on the anniversary of ‘Welcome to the Pleasuredome.’ Holly can’t believe it’s been 30 years.

“It’s gone in the blink of an eye.

“There has been a lot of ups and downs in that time.

“But that album changed my life and I love singing those songs live because they get great reactions.

“People go absolutely mental when I play ‘Two Tribes.’

“And it’s always quite an emotional moment when you have 30,000 people singing ‘The Power of Love’ in front of you.”

Holly Johnson’s new album is Called ‘Europa’ and is finally available to buy in September and he will be touring the UK shortly after.
