Two district muscle men will bid to take on the world on TV over the Christmas period.

Strongman athletes and training partners Graham Hicks, from Morecambe, and Jack McIntosh, who lives in Bolton-le-Sands, competed in the World’s Strongest Man competition in Los Angeles in September, which will be shown on Channel 5 from December 27.

Hicks, a former Our Lady’s High School pupil, who finished fourth in Britain’s Strongest Man this year, was making his debut at the event.

“I’d obviously expected it to be hard but it was a lot harder,” said the design engineer at BAE Systems in Warton. “I was just happy to be competing at that level and didn’t expect to do anything spectacular.”

Hicks, who trains at Salt Ayre Leisure Centre and The Muscle Factory in Lancaster, was keeping tight-lipped about how he got on.

“I’d never been to American before and it was a great experience. I didn’t get chance to do much sight-seeing I was trying to rest up.

“But one of the events was at Universal Studios and another at Venice Beach. It’s one of those places I would never have been able to go to.”

For McIntosh it was his second time at the pinnacle of strongman.

“It was good but I was carrying a bit of an injury in my hamstring,” said the 24-year-old, who runs his own health supplements business and helps manage a company that fits out gyms. I didn’t do too badly though and it was a great experience in a tough group. The weather was really hot too but I think I did pretty well.”

McIntosh’s group will be broadcast on Channel at 8pm on December 27 with Hicks’ on December 30 at the same time.

*McIntosh also recently had a chance to try out for the world’s biggest professional wrestling company World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE).

He was invited to trials after being spotted on last year’s World’s Strongest Man and impressed observers despite having no wrestling experience.

“I got asked after being on TV (in World’s Strongest Man) last year.

“I’d never done any wrestling before but the feedback was that I was one of the favourites from the European trials.

“I expect to hear back in a couple of weeks.”
