Rising rally star Tom Woodburn began preparations for the 2016 season in earnest last weekend with an impressive run on the Cambrian Rally in Wales alongside Chesterfield based driver Rhys Yates.

Using the Llandudno based event as an opportunity to gain further miles together as a partnership ahead of the start of the MSA British Rally Championship in three weeks’ time, the crew piloted their Ford Fiesta R5 car to a well-deserved fifth place overall in a strong field.

On some of the same stages that feature in the British round of the World Rally Championship, the pair were consistently among the fastest crews on the event, with their times for six of the eight stages being within the top five.

Taking the event’s award for the best crew under 25 as a result, further confidence was taken by the Brettex backed crew, as their performances saw them keep pace with the efforts of Scottish driver Euan Thorburn, who is expected to be a title contender in the new look BRC.

Reflecting on an impressive day’s work, Woodburn said: “We’re pretty happy with today.

“We came to have a shakedown run to get more competitive miles together before the BRC starts and were taking things steady, so to have that sort of pace already gives us plenty to be positive about.

“There was plenty of learning done today, especially about the Michelin tyres that we are going to be running on this year and it has been a really worthwhile event for us.

“Seeing our names at the top of the timing charts is good and we got a bit of a lift by being so close to Euan a number of times and I can’t wait to get to Mid Wales and those night stages now.

“We’ve got one more event planned before then to make sure we’re ready for what is going to be a very exciting year.”
