Following the injury referee Jenkins called both captains together to see if they would agree to the game being called off and the result to stand but Andy Powers, after consulting with his players, said he would like the game to resume when the injured player had either recovered or had been assessed by the ambulance crew.

So after a delay play recommenced but the Vale were unable to bridge the one point gap in the score line.

The visitors began brightly enough with Ben Dorrington kicking a penalty goal in the eighth minute.

Widnes’ Gareth Riley crossed for a try in the 17th minute, his fellow centre Dave Welsh added the conversion, and prop John Winstanley then proved unstoppable, his try being converted by Welsh also.

In the 50th minute lock Alex Baines went over following sustained forward pressure, his try being converted by Dorrington.

This score brought the Vale back into the game but Widnes continued to probe and test, varying their angles of attack and giving their opponents little respite.

In the 70th minute a rare Vale attack resulted in Dorrington kicking his second penalty to set up an intriguing climax, but Widnes held their nerve both before and after the injury, to give their loyal supporters something to cheer about.
