Wharton storms to victory at Salt Ayre Cog Set youngsters race hard in Nelson

Salt Ayre Cog set youngsters put in a string of fine performances in round three of the North West Youth League at the Steven Burke circuit in Nelson.

The entire 17-strong Lancaster team raced well with a strong wind, especially on the home straight, making for some tough racing.

Youth D (under 10) girls Emilia Wood and Esther Wong finished second and third overall with Morgan Williams a fine fourth in the short Youth D boys race.

Archie Honeysett and John Bardsley also rode well, with the former finishing eighth in the long race.

In the Youth C (under 12) races Cog Set had a five-strong team – Isaac Atkinson, William Dykes, Adam Hodgson, John Roberts and Callum Williams and all rode well with Adam fifth and John 10th overall.

In the Youth C girls, Tilly Percy continued her great season with second overall while Nancye Roberts came a strong fourth.

In the Youth B (under 14) boys short race, Bobby Horton was unfortunate to crash out in the sprint while Sam Pugh rode strongly in the longer race.

Arguably the day’s best results came in the Youth A (under 16) boys races.

In the short race Ben Barlow did fine work on the front of the bunch before Elliot Reed broke off the front to win by three bike lengths.

Later, in the long race, George Wharton rode superbly, attacking on the last lap for victory. Overall George was first, Elliot second and Ben 23rd.
