Vale coach targets strong end to 2014

Vale of Lune’s head coach believes their run of six games between now and the end of the calendar year will have a big say in how the season pans out.

Four of the North One West matches are at home starting with Carlisle visiting Powderhouse Lane in a 2.15pm kick-off this Saturday, November 1.

Fergus Owens, whose side are seventh in the standings after a 39-19 defeat at Kendal last time out, said: “We’re really looking forward to the run until the end of the year.

“With four of the six being at home we’re targeting wins and bonus points.

“We’re seventh but it’s really tight and we’re confident we can put a run together.

“At this level of rugby seasons tend to be in two halves and open up after Christmas.

“With the Brian Ashton influence we’re still trying to master that heads up style of rugby.

“We’re maybe a bit one dimensional at times but we’re getting better every week.”

The defeat against Kendal was one where Vale’s attacking style didn’t pay off as the Cumbrians battled their way to a derby victory.

Owens said: “It was really tough. 
“They played their own brand of rugby particularly well.

“It’s not easy on the eye but they’re the masters of driving and rucking.

“We didn’t make it easy for ourselves because we conceded 21 points in five minutes.

“In a way though that meant the final scoreline flattered them a bit.”
