Squash: Vale go top with win over Preston

Vale 1 took the top spot in Division 5 North of the North West Counties Squash League with a close-fought victory over previously unbeaten Preston Grasshoppers 6.

The result was in doubt until the final game of the night. Stuart Featon at No 5 suffered a reverse, going down 3-0 but Shaun Gorry turned the tables with a 3-0 victory. Dave Jewitt at No 3 battled hard but lost 3-0.

With two games remaining, it was up to Adam Holtham at No 2 and Jeremy Stopford at No 1 to see Vale through.

Adam dropped a game but grabbed a win while Jeremy racked up a 3-0 victory to take Vale 1 to the top of the table.

Vale 2, playing at home, suffered a heavy defeat to Blackpool Cricket Club 4, with only Andy Haines at No 1 emerging victorious after a nail-biting battle with an opponent who had previously lost only one match this season.
