Lancaster City-Morecambe friendly cancelled with Giant Axe pitch not ready
The friendly between Lancaster City and Morecambe on Saturday has been cancelled.
The near neighbours had been due to meet at Giant Axe on July 14 but the pitch has been deemed unsafe.
Warm weather means that despite the best efforts of the Dolly Blues the playing surface is currently too firm to play on.
It is hoped that the associated family fun day in aid of Unique Kidz & Co can be rearranged but there is no new date for the game with both clubs having filled their pre-season programmes.
“It was decided between the representatives of the two clubs that, following an extremely hot and dry summer, causing delays in renovation works, the playing surface in the current state wouldn’t be safe to play,” a statement said.
“Whilst every effort has been made over the summer to try and keep up with the weather, artificially watering the pitch, with a small army of volunteers working immense amounts of hours to try and rectify problem areas, the proposed date has simply come too soon.
“We felt it was in the best interest of everyone associated to both clubs to make an early decision to allow time for alternate arrangements.
“The family fun day in aid of Unique Kidz & Co. will hopefully be re-scheduled to a later date, which will probably be at the start of the league season.
“We hope that all those intending to come and support will still do so and we can raise a good amount of money for the outstanding work they do.”
The sides met for the first time in eight years last July with the Shrimps winning 1-0 at the Globe Arena thanks to a goal from Andy Fleming.
