Kirkby Lonsdale Under 16s emerged 17-7 winners in their Cumbria Cup clash with Hawcoat Park.

The Kirkby pack was a decisive and destructive force and after a sequence of pick and drives towards the home line it was burly prop Alan Taylor who powered through a gap to register Kirkby’s first try.

A repeat of this successful tactic again took play to the Hawcoat line and ably supported by prop Jacob Young hooker Tom Maguire scored Kirkby’s second try and the Kirkby front row was rampant. Hawcoat Park replied with a try through their backs, the first try against Kirkby in five outings, but Kirkby held their form and their lead at half time.

Hawcoat redoubled their efforts in the second half but attack after attack was held and repelled by
Kirkby’s tenacious bodies on the line tackling which is a feature of this team and the home side were unable to score.

Having weathered the early storm the Kirkby pack once again re-asserted it’s authority on the game and from good field position fly half Cameron Holmes cut through the defence for Kirkby’s third try.

Hawcoat Park never gave up but the all round performance of the Kirkby team under the inspiring leadership of skipper Lewis Dennison was an unstoppable force in this quarter final and Kirkby now set their sights on the semi final against Workington.
