Heysham Atoms 48-8 Shevington Sharks

After a very tight first half that the Atoms had just edged they romped away with it in the second period, scoring 38 unanswered points.

The Atoms started brightly and captain Liam Hall crashed through the middle of the ruck with barely two minutes on the clock.

The Atoms inability to deal with kick offs continues to haunt them as an error straight from the re-start handed the initiative straight back to Shevingtonand they scored close to the right hand corner flag.

An Atoms kick to the right of the posts was fielded by the Shevington full back but the ferocity of the Atoms challenge dislodged the ball and the alert Jack Lawton picked up the loose ball and placed it over the line.

The Wigan side had the last shout of the half when a bouncing ball ended in the try zone and a Shevington player was the quickest to react, scoring the try that gave the Atoms a slender 10-8 lead at the break.

Early in the second period Jack Edmondson forced another error with great contact into another tackle. A flowing attack to the right took play close to the line and hooker for the day Mark Walker found Al Crookall with a reverse pass and he scored the first Atoms points of the second half.

A good passage of Atoms passing gave man of the match Callum Hall enough space to show his determination to get to the line with good footwork and cross for his fourth try of the season.

The try that really broke the Shevington side’s will came from an attack of their own down the Atoms left. The ball was fumbled 15 meters from the Atoms line and winger Jack Lawton picked up and out sprinted the cover on a 85 metre dash for the try line.

From this point on the Atoms opened up in spectacular fashion.

Chris Thomas crashed over to the left of the posts and Michael Forrest’s speed and evasion skills brought him a fine individual try.

Jack Edmondson scored his customary long range try, beating four players on his way to crossing the line, before Al Crookall finished off the try scoring, picking a fine inside line of running after the Atoms’ handling had again caused no end of problems to the Shevington line.

Stuart Lacey converted for the sixth time in the game to give the Atoms a very impressive 48-8 victory.
