He said: “Women’s rugby is probably one of the fastest growing games we’ve got in this country – in terms of touch rugby it’s a sport that allows everyone who’s starting out to come down and give it a go.

“There’s no contact, it’s really social, lots of fun and doesn’t having that stigma of ‘I might get injured’ or ‘I’m going to get hurt’ – even for just an hour it’s better than a gym membership – it’s free and that social element of it should create much more of an interest.”

No kit or knowledge of rugby is required - only a pair of trainers is needed.

Martin, who has helped run beach rugby on Morecambe Bay for four years, says the Vale have been supportive of the efforts.

He said: “The club is behind the plan 100 per cent which is the barrier normally.

“If you can get a club which allow you to use your facilities that’s great and the club want to set up the women’s section as well as the girls section they’ve got there – so all credit to them.”

*The new Vale of Lune RUFC girls under 13 and under 15 teams played their first games on Sunday – just eight weeks after starting up the section.
