John McGuinness: It's hard for the rider to stop racing

Having just turned 44 the Morecambe Missile looks to further cement his legacy as an Isle of Man TT great on his 20th year racing around the Mountain Course in 
2016.

The Honda rider has been fielding questions about his possible retirement for years and is honest enough to say it might be easier for the decision to be taken out of his hands, such is his addiction to racing.

McGuinness said: “I almost need someone to make the decision for me.

“It’s a shame there isn’t a limit.

“You’re allowed to do so many and the the governing body say right, ‘you’ve had your time, we’re taking your licence off you now’.

“It’s hard for the rider to stop.”

History suggests there is plenty left in the tank, the man whose record McGuinness is chasing, Joey Dunlop, having been winning at the age of 48.

The Morecambe Missile, who has 23 wins to Dunlop’s 26, said: “I’m 44 and he was 48 and winning.

“It’s not out of the question.

“It would be nice to match him and retire at the top of the tree with my all time hero.”
