Shireshead travelled to Warton on a chilly and blustery April afternoon and won by 21 runs.
Batting first, progress was slow on a two-paced wicket in the face of disciplined bowling from G Crowther and S Beck, but gradually a platform was laid as Tom Jacques (31) and Paul Yates added 31 for the first wicket.
Phil Bovis (22), Danny Wilkinson and Nick Rafferty (23) continued to build a score as Warton’s change bowlers of G Cassidy and R Needham gave no more away than Crowther and Beck, but momentum gradually built and Simon Gould, Dave Jack and Phil Oliver ensured a competitive 146 for 8 was posted at the tea interval.
The early stages of Warton’s reply proved to be crucial as James Rafferty (2 for 29) and Dave Jack (4 for 25) bowled with great control as Warton were reduced to 20 for 4. However, new recruit Cassidy (49) rallied the innings first with the aid of T Barnfield and then Crowther as the score was advanced quickly to 99 for 5 in the 30th over.
Peter Wilson (2 for 30) and Jacques (2 for 18) then struck with consecutive balls to turn the tide back in Shireshead’s favour once and for all before Jack returned to finish the job and secure a hard-earned victory by 21 runs.
