Bare’s Phil Burton and Mal Capstick collected more trophies and another bag-full of points in their quest to retain their BTRDA Historic/Ravenol Oil Rally championship title in Somerset at the weekend.
Promoted by Burnham-on-Sea Motor Club and Minehead Motor Club, the Somerset Stages Rally saw a top quality entry of 145 cars assemble in Minehead.
Saturday morning dawned and everyone knew it was going to be a slippery event in the forests and the tarmac stage over Porlock Hill.
Seeded at 21, the Millington-powered, KL Brewery/Jones Plumbing/Lune Valley Car Sales-supported Escort Mk2 was experiencing traction issues in the very muddy conditions – Phil just couldn’t get the power down onto the track .
A scheduled visit to the service area saw the team change tyres for the two, tarmac stages over Porlock Hill where hundreds of spectators had gathered – Phil and Mal didn’t disappoint with two very competitive runs.
Back to service and onto Pirelli ‘soft’ tyres for the remaining forests. “Bingo, we were really on it, swapping times with the opposition” quoted Phil.
Despite never having previously competed in that area of the UK the team were rewarded with another Class (B12) win and finished 15th overall and another bag-full of championship points – against some very expensive 4wd cars.
