Every year The North West Billiards and Snooker Association runs a snooker competition to find the best snooker player in the region, and the Northern Area competition took place at Squires Snooker and Sports Bar, Lancaster at the end of last month.

There were 37 entries, a record for the event.

There was a couple of early shocks with the elimination of the 2013 Regional Champion Trevor Lamb 3-1 to the ever improving Vinny Gemson, and Andy Milliard, the Kendal professional who went down 3-1 to local stalwart Mick Simm.

The four semi-finalists were Dave Duffy, Mike Logan, Jonathon Stevenson and Steve Scott, and they will represent the area in the final stages against the qualifiers from Central Lancashire, Merseyside and Greater Manchester.

The competition was played to a conclusion for The Whitbread Trophy, Dave Duffy beating Steve Scott in the final 3-0.

Duffy had played well all day, eliminating local legend Gary Knowles in the first round and favourite James Silverwood in the quarter-finals.

Fifty plus breaks were made by Jack Lupton, Vinny Gemson, Dave Duffy, Phil Browning, Mike Logan and Mick Simm, with the highest being a 68 from Jonathon Stevenson.
