An amateur golfer from Morecambe is one step closer to playing with a star of the European Tour after winning a prestigious Bridgestone event on his club’s calendar.

Peter Lovett-Horn, who is a board director and captain of the seniors, won Bridgestone UK tyre division’s DriveGuard Trophy at Morecambe Golf Club, which has put him on course for a round at the Pro-Am of the British Masters, supported by Sky Sports, in October.

The 20 handicapper, who was a 23 handicap before his tournament success, won the medal competition with 59 shots net, which now puts him on a journey to a regional final in June, followed by a Pro-Am appearance at the Bridgestone Challenge – a Challenge Tour event – at the end of August at Heythrop Park in Oxfordshire.

And if Peter, 72, is part of the winning team at Heythrop, he will then go on to play at the Pro-Am of the British Masters, supported by Sky Sports, at The Grove in October, where he will play with a household name of the sport.

Peter said he was proud to win the tournament but never expected to win.

“It was a really unexpected victory. I think it’s one of the best rounds of golf I’ve ever played at Morecambe and I’ve been here for 23 years.

“I’ve been learning from Emma Fletcher. It’s clear here coaching tips have really helped.”

Bridgestone is embarking on an exciting golf sponsorship quite unique to the UK tyre industry, featuring a European Tour event partnership with the British Masters, supported by Sky Sports, the resurrection of an English based Challenge Tour tournament and a nationwide amateur competition with nearly 200 other clubs.

He added: “I’m really excited for the next round.

“It’s a real opportunity for me to go far.

“I reckon I must be one of the oldest names in the next round.

“I’m really excited but I don’t feel any pressure.

“I’m just going to play my natural game.”

The DriveGuard Trophy is free to enter and is accessible to golfers of all ages and handicaps and is open to men, women and juniors.

Each club winner will go on to play in regional DriveGuard Trophy finals in June and July, with the triumphant golfers in the regional finals going on to play in the pro-am of the Bridgestone Challenge event itself in August.

And to link the sponsorships perfectly, the winners of the Bridgestone Challenge pro-am will then win a trip to the British Masters, supported by Sky Sports, to play in the official pro-am with some of the biggest and best names in the sport, in October.

Before every club event, each participant receives a voucher to play in the Bridgestone DriveGuard Trophy, along with a tyre offer.

This enables them to qualify for a British Masters supported by Sky Sports shoe bag when purchasing four Bridgestone DriveGuard tyres in the next six months, along with a dozen of Bridgestone golf balls.

In addition, a free MOT will be offered to DriveGuard Trophy participants in an added incentive, after the tyres are purchased.
