Morecambe started their summer in style with a fine 47-run win over Netherfield at Parkside Road on Saturday.

The visitors welcomed professional Suraj Randiv and new signing Eddy Read into their side but it was two old hands who caught the eye.

Phil Dennison scored 65 to anchor the innings as Morecambe were asked to bat first before Tommy Clough’s 5-24 wrapped up victory.

New captain Josh Dixon opened with Dennison but no sooner had the game got underway with the visitors 10-0 it was stopped for rain which reduced the affair to 40 overs per side.

Upon the restart Dixon (37) and Dennison flourished as both Mark Clarkson and Netherfield professional Dieter Klein struggled with their lengths, the opening pair reaching their first 50 partnership of the season inside nine overs.

The duo continued to play positively and took Morecambe forward finding the boundary with regularity however as a 100 partnership loomed Netherfield new boy Richard Potter accounted for Dixon clean bowled.

The rejuvenated Dennison however continued on his merry way alongside Ryan Pearson (22) and passed his 50 as the pair took Morecambe to 132-2 and into an extremely strong position.

Klein however removed Pearson leg before and did the same shortly after as Randiv went the same way for six.

Dennison accelerated but was out caught by Daniel Gaunt off the bowling of Ryan Wilson trying to push the scoring rate.

Lewis Edge (16), Gareth Pedder (5) and Read (12 not out) ensured Morecambe claimed full batting points finishing with a more than competitive 181-6.

In reply, Dixon handed new boys Read and Randiv the new ball with the Sri Lankan international striking first to remove Netherfield skipper Marc Brown for just four.

Read continued to toil beating the outside edge on umpteen occasions before Ben Barrow drove him straight to skipper Dixon at mid-off.

Morecambe looked to be on top with Netherfield 52-2 however Potter (55) had other ideas as he began to get stuck into the Morecambe attack.

It was the introduction of Clough that changed things, as he removed the dangerous John Huck to an excellent catch in the deep by Lewis Smith before Klein went in exactly the same fashion.

Potter was running out of partners and when Randiv removed Bradley Earl thanks to an excellent catch by Clough, Netherfield’s hopes were fading fast.

Clough eventually dismissed Potter to complete his five-wicket haul with Read returning to ensure Morecambe took all 15 points back to Woodhill Lane as he removed Nathan Chambers thanks to a smart catch from Uzair Shah.
