Morecambe 2nds batted to a losing draw in their rain-affected opening game of the season against Netherfield.

The start at Woodhill Lane was delayed by three hours with the game reduced to 28 overs.

Having won the toss and put Netherfield in Irfan Qayyum removed both openers in his first two overs.

Theo Gallagher and the impressive Joe Atkinson (50) steadied the ship before Gulam Maje’s first wicket, along with Qayyum’s third, left Netherfield on 53-4.

The experienced Scott Clement (61 not out) provided excellent support to Atkinson before the latter fell well caught by Damian Gudgeon off the bowling of Maje.

Clement and Martin Boyd accelerated the scoring rate late in the innings with the former taking 19 from the last over as the innings closed on 163-6.

Morecambe’s reply never looked like challenging the imposing Netherfield total.

Prithiv Ghosal top scored with 39, including two sixes, before debutante Luke Bray (nine not out) and Michael Fisher (15 not out) made sure of the losing draw.
