MORECAMBE got their season off to a steady start with an entertaining, if frustrating losing draw against Kendal.
With Kendal employing ex-Morecambe professional Werner Coetsee as their sub pro Morecambe were grateful to their own pro Anwar Ali, who scored 60 on his debut, almost taking his newly adopted side to victory.
Electing to field first captain Woodhead couldn’t have asked for a better start as Kendal limped to 20-2 off 10 overs, with both openers back in the hutch as Williams and Ali both got rewards for an impressive line and length.
Morecambe then spilt two very straightforward catches and as with any top batsmen, the pair of Coetsee and Hunte took advantage and both progressed beyond 50.
The partnership had reached 146 when Cupit eventually broke through Coetsee’s defence, he was eventually to end up with 3-73, an excellent first day return off 19 accurate overs.
