Lancaster and Morecambe Hockey Club secured second place in North Division 2 West with a 6-0 win at home to Bebington.

The three points means LMHC now have the chance of a promotion play-off against the runners-up of the East division.

The home side started well and won a short corner inside the first two minutes with man of the match Tom Morgan stepping up to open the scoring.

The second came shortly after following some continuous pressure on the Bebington defence.

A fantastic run from Morgan down the length of the touchline ended with him picking out Matt Hartnett at the top of the ‘D’ to fire it past the Bebington keeper to make it 2-0.

Bebington always looked dangerous coming forward and LMHC had to rely on some solid defending from Andy Crabtree and Iain Burstow to stop the visitors getting back into the game.

Bebington did win a flick after being awarded a short corner but Mark Hutchinson made a fine save to maintain the two-goal lead.

The attacking threat of LMHC came thick and fast from the front line of Rob Cook, Nick Davey, Phil McMorris and Steve Goodwin-Allen and it was Cook to capitalise on Bebington sitting deep when he found the back of the net for the hosts’ third goal.

Lancaster and Morecambe kept coming after the break and Morgan, again in the thick of the action, linked up with Mike Sambell down the right side to find his way into the opposing ‘D’ to fire a ball across the back line to pick out Steven Foy lurking at the back post for an easy tap in to make it 4-0.

The fifth came from open play when Sambell carried the ball through the midfield to supply a wonderful ball to the top of the D to find Hartnett waiting for the pass to then sweetly flick it over the keeper who came charging but couldn’t make the save.

LMHC took the opportunity to counter attack after some excellent defending from Matt Wright and Matt Lee to supply McMorris finding himself one-on-one with the ‘keeper and smartly lobbing it in to round off a professional performance from Lancaster and Morecambe.

LMHC head to West Derby looking for another win next weekend on the back of a slick performance to secure their runners-up spot.
