Heysham Atoms face the biggest game in their near 30-year history when they travel to St Helens side Bold Miners on Saturday.
The two teams are on the same points at the top of the North West Men’s League Division One with two games to go with Bold Miners topping the table on points difference.
The Atoms know a win in either of this Saturday’s clash on Merseyside or the game the following week at home to Wigan side Spring View and they’ll be guaranteed promotion with a spot in the top two. Win both, and they’re champions.
Club secretary Dave Crow however is well aware that of the three games the Atoms have lost this season, two have come against the sides they conclude the season against.
He said: “We’ve lost three games this season and have got to face two of those sides.
“But we’ve got a really good feeling about it after winning well on Saturday (in a friendly at Premier Division Folly Lane).
“This is massive for us, I’m nervous already.
“It’s as big as it’s ever been. We’ve reached a Lancashire Cup final before but that was a one-off game after a good cup run.
“To get in the Premier Division considering where we are in the country, miles away from the rugby league heartlands, would be massive for us.”
The Atoms picked up their fifth walkover win of the campaign on Saturday with Hindpool Tigers from Barrow the latest team unable to field a team this season.
It is a situation that has left Atoms management and players frustrated with the league. But all that would be put to bed with promotion to the top tier, where Crow hopes there would be far fewer problems with late cancellations.
He said: “I’ve been with the club since the beginning and to put it simply it’s the biggest game in my 28 years.
“To get to Premier Division level would be outstanding.
“After that it’s the National Conference where you’re travelling all over, to Yorkshire, Coventry and elsewhere.”
For any fans wanting to cheer on the Atoms at Bold Miners there will be a coach leaving the Trimpell at noon on Saturday.
