Heysham Atoms kick off their third season of summer rugby this Saturday.
The Trimpell-based side travel to Greater Manchester to face Irlam Hornets on March 8 in their opening game in the North West Men’s League Division One.
They will be looking to build on an impressive campaign that saw them finish third in 2013 in their first season in the division having been promoted from the third tier.
Club secretary Dave Crow said: “Things went really well last season.
“We were pushing for promotion and lost our way a little bit after we had a to field a weakened team on Challenge Cup final weekend.
“But we did really well against the two promoted sides Folly Lane and Ulverston.
“It’s going to be tough to replicate that but things are looking good.”
The Atoms’ preparations haven’t been helped with their three friendlies being called off due to the recent bad weather meaning a cup game against Upton has been their only competitive action ahead of the new season.
A link up with Carnforth Rugby Union Club however means several players should be sharp ahead of the campaign opener at Irlam.
Crow said: “A few of the lads have been playing for Carnforth and we’ve picked up four or five players for them.
“The lakes of Jake Harrison and Al Crookall play for the Vale too so should be firing.”
Saturday’s opponents the Hornets are taking part in their first summer rugby season but they are familiar foes for the Atoms. Crow said: “We’ve played them a lot over the years.
“They’re always a very aggressive side but we usually seem to come out alright against them.”
The club are also expanding their youth-set up this year. The Atoms’ successful under 16s will move up to under 18 level with under 13 and under 11 sides also being introduced.
The under 18s kick off their season at Rochdale Mayfield on Sunday. Anyone interested in joining the club should call Dave on 07966 322 864.
