Heysham Atoms kicked off 2015 in style with a big cup win over Bradford side Queensbury.
The Atoms had only been back in training for a week in preparation for their fourth summer season but proved more than a match for the Pennine Premier Division outfit who reached the semi-finals of this winter competition last season.
The hosts started quickly and never looked back. Inspired by man of the match Jamie Cottle, playing in an unfamiliar position of scrum half, the Atoms scored all their points in the opening 17 minutes.
The Atoms had first use of the gale force wind that was blowing straight down the ground and within four minutes Matty Short had cut inside at the right corner to score on a last tackle play.
Cottle then placed a dangerous kick into the dead ball area and impressive youngster Matty Humpage dived on the ball for the Atoms’ second score.
The third try was a piece of individual brilliance from Cottle as he weaved his way to the line finishing off with a one-handed stretch to place the ball down.
Billy Livingstone added his second kick to give the Atoms a 16-0 lead.
Michael Forrest, another under 18s product, entered the game to make his debut a little earlier than expected and showed what a prospect he is with some speed to burn and a keen eye for his defensive duties.
Excellent work by full back Jack Lawton under some increasing pressure and a try-saver from Jack Edmondson and Callum Hall just about held the Atoms line in tact up until the half-time break.
The second half wasn’t one for the feint-hearted as the Atoms faced the elements and a fired up Queensbury side.
Within 10 minutes the Yorkshire side were on the scoreboard with a try as a result of some strong forward carries.
As the aggression and physicality increased the Atoms upped their defensive resolve.
Queensbury crossed a second time but the try was chalked off for offside following a kick.
Heysham stood firm with Forrest and Jake Harrison making valuable yards out of defence as they tried to break the siege on their line.
The Atoms ultimately made sure of victory the hard way to set up a trip to Dewsbury to take on National Conference Division 3 side Thornhill Trojans in round two on January 24.
