Heysham Atoms’ grand final appearance was the perfect way to end a memorable season according to their secretary.
The Trimpell outfit lost out to St Helens side Bold Miners in the North West Men’s League Division One showpiece game, one of five finals played at Widnes Vikings’ Select Security Stadium on Saturday.
But Dave Crow says it was a fitting finale for the Atoms who had already sealed promotion to the Premier Division behind Bold in the regular season.
He said: “To be able to play at a stadium like that was fantastic.
“It might be a while before it comes around again because it will be a big ask to get to the Premier Division final.
“It was a fantastic way to finish a great season after getting promoted.
“Playing all five finals on the day at a Super League ground made it a great occasion, especially for a side who started down in division nine 28 years ago.”
As for the game itself, Crow feels the Atoms didn’t hit the heights of some of their regular season performances in the 36-22 defeat.
He said: “I don’t think we did ourselves justice.
“We held them out well after making a few mistakes but at one point it looked like they might run away with it.
“But we came back into it and could have nicked it. The scoreline flattered them a little in the end.
“It was a little bit disappointing and the occasion maybe caused a few nerves, you could see it on the coach going down.
“We’re looking forward to next season in the Premier Division now.”
