Morecambe CC 1st XI made a disappointing start to their Northern league campaign, losing by five wickets to a talented Leyland side.

Batting first after winning the toss, openers Suman Shrestha and Josh Dixon made a steady start on a damp pitch which offered plenty to the opening bowlers of Reece and Jones.

The pair had just began to go through the gears, reaching 49-0 when Shrestha (22) perished, caught in the gully by Reece off the bowling of Jones.

Two balls later Dixon (23) was to perish, left helpless as the ball trickled back off an inside edge to topple his off bail.

At 50-2 and with professional Vishal Tripathi again on debut alongside Ryan Pearson, Morecambe were in a good position.

The pair mixed singles with powerful hitting but Tripathi (13) was the next man to go LBW sweeping to the evergreen Makinson. Pearson (33) continued and was to top score for Morecambe as his middle order partners came and went, Makinson’s slow left arm bowling picking up wickets at key intervals.

After a promising start Morecambe stuttered to 141-7. Leyland’s response started poorly as Law and Dixon combined to run out Thompson (2) in the second over, and a second run out was to follow with Morecambe’s third debutant Yakub Bhamji (1-18) removing Cotes.

Bhamji’s fellow bowlers toiled however and with Leyland professional Luis Reece looking in imperious form Leyland looked favourites.

Reg Cupit (1-35) picked up the wicket of Lamb, and Tripathi’s off spin accounted for Andrew Makinson (21). Leyland reached Morecambe’s target in the 40th over, Reece finishing on 71 not out.
