Dave Chisnall kicked off his Betway Premier League Darts campaign with a 7-1 win over Peter Wright in Leeds on Thursday night.
The Morecambe ace reeled off six successive legs as he swept to victory, producing the heavier scoring and clinical finishing as he took victory in the season’s opening fixture at the First Direct Arena.
Chisnall said: “I’m delighted.
“Peter didn’t play as well as he can but I outscored him and my finishing was good and I was happy with that.
“The atmosphere was fantastic but I wasn’t nervous. It’s a brilliant venue and I had goosebumps everywhere!”
Chisnall held throw to win the opening leg of the new season in front of a crowd of more than 11,000 before Wright hit double top to level the match.
It was all Chisnall from then on with the Morecambe man finishing 24 for a 2-1 lead with a 180 then helping him break throw on double five.
He struggled on doubles in the fifth leg but had enough of a cushion to extend his advantage to 4-1 on double one.
An 82 finish made it four legs in a row and another break before Chisnall made sure of a point in leg seven despite a 180 from Wright.
Chisnall then completed victory in style with an 87 finish for an 11-dart leg.
Elsewhere, Gary Anderson was a dramatic 7-5 winner over Phil Taylor with Adrian Lewis hitting top form to see off reigning champion Raymond van Barneveld 7-1.
2013 Premier League champion Michael van Gerwen raced to a 7-3 win over Kim Huybrechts and Stephen Bunting came from 6-4 down to grab a draw with James Wade.
The £700,000 tournament continues with Week Two at the BIC in Bournemouth next Thursday where Chisnall faces van Barneveld in the night’s final match.
