Dave Chisnall narrowly missed out on a nine-dart finish as he exited the third Coral UK Open Qualifier in Wigan on Sunday.
The Morecambe ace wired a double 12 for a perfect leg before going on to lose 6-5 to Robert Thornton in his quarter-final at the Robin Park Tennis Centre.
The event was eventually won by Michael van Gerwen as the world number one made it a weekend double after victory on Saturday.
Adrian Lewis won Friday’s opening event in Wigan as Chisnall enjoyed mixed fortunes in the triple-header.
On Friday he exited in round three after a 6-5 defeat to Scott Dale and fared no better on Saturday with a 6-2 loss to Dutchman Jermaine Wattimena in the second round.
Sunday was much improved for the Morecambe man who on the way to the quarter-finals posted a storming 118.66 average in his 6-0 win over Wayne Jones in round four.
He also picked up wins over Ross Smith, Ricky Evans and Michael Smith.
