The runners were punished by finishing the 10k up the gruelling hill that leads inside the Castle gates but they were then granted their freedom and a medal.

Won by Bowland’s Chris Arthur who stormed the Castle in a time of 32m.35, first back for the home Lancaster and Morecambe Athletics Club was Michael Roy who finished 10th out of more than 160 runners in 39m.44.

In next was Ben Ransome, with a fine effort of 47m.40 placing him 39th and he was followed by Patrick Corbett in 49m.22.

Katherine Lewis ran well in 54m.28 to finish 79th overall.

After the 10k there was a one mile Halloween fancy dress fun run for those young and old and the ghoulish group of skeletons, superheroes, pumpkins and pirates enjoyed flying around the course.
