The 26-year-old tees up for the first time this season at the Madeira Islands Open on Thursday hoping it is the start of a breakout year.

Senior, like all the other players on the second-tier tour, is targeting a place in the hallowed top 15 to seal a place on the main European Tour next year.

The former Walker Cup star said: “My first aim is to make the top 15 on the order of merit but I want to win it too.

“There’s a lot of good players but you’ve got to aim high.

“Obviously I’ve got certain goals like coming in the top 70 to keep my card.

“But you’ve got to have achievable goals and then ones that are going to take a little bit more getting, something more difficult.

“The standard on the Challenge Tour is phenomenal. There’s not much difference between it and the main tour.”

The season opener on the Portuguese island is a big one with a chance to get an early march in the order of merit and seal a place at the following week’s European Tour event, the Trophee Hassan II in Morocco.

Senior said: “It’s a big prize fund to start with.

“It’s an event that can really make a difference in the long run and if you make the top 10 you’re playing on the main tour next week.

“There’s a lot of good players here so it’s a week where you’re hoping you get a couple of good bounces and hole a few long puts.

“I’ve made a few changes over the winter and I’m feeling good.”
