A Michael Rose long throw was flicked on at the near post and McGurk was in the perfect place to head into the empty net.

That gave the Shrimps a massive lift of confidence and they caused the home side all sort of problems from then on and it came as no shock when they added a second on 27 minutes.

It also came as no shock when Kevin Ellison was the man to score it. Just a day after his 39th birthday he showed his importance to the team with a stunning volley with his supposedly weaker right foot that looped over Scott Brown.

There was more to come from Ellison when he added a third Morecambe goal on 38 minutes. Again the Shrimps broke quickly and Gregg Wylde found Ellison free again at the far post and the veteran was perfectly placed to head past the helpless Brown from six yards out.

The second half began as well as the first with Wylde scoring a fine individual goal on 52 minutes.

The new loan signing was allowed to run at the Wycombe defence before curling a perfectly placed left foot shot into the bottom right hand corner of Brown’s goal.

Wycombe finally raised their game and hit back with a long range effort from substitute Nick Freeman which sparked a rally from the home side.

Adebayo Akinfenwa should have scored but volleyed wide from close range before Luke O’Nien set up a nervous finale with a fine finish six minutes from time.
