Morecambe Ladies got their season properly up and running with back-to-back wins in the Women’s Premier League Northern Division One.

On Sunday, Nick Barrett’s side were 3-2 winners at Mossley Hill with Becky Whittingham’s corner going through a pack of players before being adjudged to have crossed the line 10 minutes from time to hand The Shrimps victory.

Lauren Oatley had given the Merseyside hosts the lead before Whittingham got her first of the day to level things up after good work from Megan Doherty.

Whittingham then put The Shirmps in front as she outmuscled defender Kaisha Sohl and ‘keeper Danielle Farrell before calmly slotting home.

Sohl got her revenge to make it 2-2 with a header that looped over the defence and snuck under the crossbar.

It was left to Whittingham to complete her hat-trick and seal another three points as Morecambe moved up to seventh in the table.

The result backed up a fine 3-0 win over Blackpool Wren Rovers under the lights at Lancaster & Morecambe College on Wednesday night.

The Shrimps played some of their best football of the season with superb free-kicks from Jo Norris and Emily Hutton handing them a 2-0 half-time lead as Laura Callis fired a penalty over the crossbar.

The Wrens battled back but Whittingham fed Emily Hutton for Morecambe’s third to make sure of the points as The Shrimps hit top form.

They next travel to Stoke in the League Cup on Sunday.
