Morecambe host Southend in the first round of the FA Cup on Saturday.
Phil Brown. Colourful former Hull City and Preston boss took over from Paul Sturrock in March this year. Shrimpers had already reached the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy final where they lost 2-0 to Crewe a fortnight later. Ended last season 11th with higher hopes this time around.
Barry Corr. Former Exeter and Swindon man is just one part of some impressive attacking talent that Brown has at his disposal. Roots Hall number 10 has three goals so far this season, scoring both goals in 2-0 win over the Shrimps’ Lancashire rivals Fleetwood earlier in the season. Morecambe fans should also look out for former loanee Kevan Hurst with the winger impressing in Essex.
After a patchy run of form that saw them defeat League 2 leaders Fleetwood but fall foul of both Dagenham at home and Newport on their travels, Brown’s side were 3-0 winners over Mansfield at Roots Hall on Saturday in a game that included three red cards. Currently ninth in the table two points behind the Shrimps with their eyes on a play-off spot.
The Shrimps nearly have a perfect record against the Shrimpers. In seven Football League meetings, Jim Bentley’s side have won six times and drawn just once, including a 3-1 triumph at Roots Hall at the start of September thanks to two goals from Andy Fleming. Morecambe have won all three games between the teams at the Globe Arena. It is the first time the sides will have met in any cup competition.
