Morecambe hope to move a big step closer to League 2 survival with victory in their Lancashire derby at Fleetwood on Saturday.

Graham Alexander.

Appointed back in December 2012 from Preston North End, Alexander has won a total of 33 games out of 77 during his 16-month tenure. The former Scottish international sees his fourth place Fleetwood in good condition, coming off the back of a recent 2-0 win away at eighth-placed Oxford United. Standing level on 68 points with Burton, Alexander will be keen to seal victory at the expense of the Shrimps to pull clear.

The Cod Army’s midfielder has been in fine form of late, playing an intergral part in the club’s recent victory over Oxford United by notching an impressive 20-yard effort. Having started his career on the books of Manchester City, the highly rated attacking-midfielder is known for his inter-linking play with an eye for goal. He arrived from Chester in the summer of 2013.

Fourteen places separate Fleetwood from the Shrimps coming into Saturday’s clash, with the Cod Army eager to make up ground on third in the table Chesterfield. The previous five fixtures have been a mixed bag for Alexander’s men, registering three wins, a draw and a defeat to the hands of Exeter. The recent comfortable victory at Oxford however has significantly boosted the promotion hopes of the Cod Army, providing added incentive to further stretch their winning streak at the hands of Morecambe. With an imminent clash at Chesterfield on the final day of the season looming, Fleetwood will be desperate to steal all three points from what is set to be an interesting local derby.

Morecambe took the spoils at the Globe Arena earlier in the season with a 1-0 victory courtesy of an 18th-minute Padraig Amond goal. The visitors maintained dominance throughout the tie yet the Shrimps’ strong defensive display handed them
victory. Fleetwood secured the league double in the 2012-2013 season however, including a 4-0 victory, which Alexander will be eager to replicate this weekend. Victory on Saturday for the Cod Army will see Alexander boast a total haul of nine points from a possible 10 against the Shrimps during his time in charge.
