Robbie Threlfall doesn’t score too many goals - but he certainly picks good times to score them.
He’s only scored two so far in his Morecambe career but both have been telling.
Last season he scored a brilliant free kick to earn a 2-1 victory over Rotherham at the Globe Arena and he followed that on Saturday with a stunning left foot volley to seal a point at Torquay.
With just six minutes to go in a game that saw the Shrimps struggle to create chances Threlfall picked up the ball on the edge of the area before letting fly with the outside of his left foot with a shot that gave home keeper Michael Poke no chance as it dipped and curled into the top left hand corner of the goal.
It was by far the brightest moment of the day for the Shrimps who were left grateful for some poor finishing from the home side in the second half.
It was always going to be a difficult game on a sodden pitch only passed fit hours earlier.
But Torquay, being managed by academy boss Geoff Harrop after the sacking of Alan Knill in midweek, handled the conditions slightly better.
They fired an early warning when Billy Bodin’s header from Michael O’Connor’s right wing cross was excellently saved by Barry Roche.
Roche was beaten however on 16 minutes by his former Chesterfield team mate Aaron Downes. Damon Lathrope hung up an inviting corner and Downes rose strongly to plant a powerful header past Roche.
Torquay remained on the front foot and Karl Hawley was presented with another good chance when O’Connor delivered another good cross from the right but the striker failed to get a convincing touch and the ball was easily gathered by Roche.
Morecambe’s only effort of note in the first half came from Threlfall who produced a decent curler from distance that dipped narrowly wide in the opening act of the second period.
The second half saw Morecambe look to step up the pace and they enjoyed more possession.
But it was Torquay who were left ruing a number of missed chances.
On 67 minutes Bodin guided a header well wide form an excellent Kevin Nicholson cross and the same player then fired over from a good opening.
Elliot Benyon then fired wildly wide when played in behind the Morecambe defence before Bodin missed the best opportunity when he had twisted his way past Mark Hughes and Chris McCready but blazed over the bar when he should have done better.
The miss gave the Shrimps’ hope and they ended the game on the front foot as they searched for an equaliser which came with Threlfall’s moment of quality.
