Morecambe welcome newly-promoted Bristol Rovers to the Globe Arena on Saturday.
Having taken over from John Ward in March 2014 Clarke couldn’t prevent the Pirates’ 94-year stay in the Football League coming to an end as they were relegated to the Conference. The 37-year-old masterminded a swift return however as a play-off final win over Grimsby on penalties in May saw Rovers become the first team in 10 years to bounce straight back to League 2.
Midfielder could be a key man for the Pirates this season having made his loan return to his first professional club permanent over the summer. Loan move from Port Vale helped Rovers get over the line in the play-offs and former Sheffield Wednesday man’s league experience could be vital.
Rovers were five games without a win until 3-0 victory at Hartlepool on Tuesday night, Matt Taylor, Billy Bodin and Jermaine Easter getting the goals. Form has been up and down but they sit 14th in League 2 a point and two places behind The Shrimps.
Rovers have edged six League 2 meetings between the sides with three wins to Morecambe’s two and one draw. The Shrimps won the last meeting between the sides at the Globe Arena, 2-1 in December 2013, but went on to lose the return fixture 1-0 the following March, Clarke’s first game in charge.
