Morecambe travel to the North East on Saturday ready to face a resurgent Hartlepool United on the opening day of the new League 2 season.
Veteran former Tranmere and Rotherham boss was responsible for preserving Hartlepool’s Football League status. Arriving in December with Pools 10 points adrift at the bottom of the League 2 the 62-year-old masterminded a remarkable recovery and will be looking to build on that this time around.
Striker has been on fire this pre-season, scoring six goals, including a hat-trick against Gateshead. The 21-year-old signed for the club in the summer after leaving Mansfield Town having had a successful one-month loan spell at the club last season. He has pace to burn and has been linking up well with experienced Billy Paynter. Another one to watch is Michael Woods. Pools’ playmaker has been impressive since returning from six months out with a dislocated ankle and fractured fibula.
Hartlepool have had a decent pre-season which ended with a 1-0 defeat to Chesterfield on Saturday. Poor results against Scunthorpe, 4-0, and Gateshead, 5-3, did raise some alarms but Moore has seen a reaction from his side.
Pools have had the better of five league and cup meeting between the sides, winning three with one draw and one Shrimps win. Last season’s meetings were both won by the away sides with Moore’s men winning 1-0 at the Globe Arena in March to avenge an earlier 2-0 defeat. It was also a result that kicked off their great escape.
