Two of the Premier Division’s top sides met in the semi-final of the North Lancashire Football League’s Black Dragon Senior Challenge Cup.
Fourth in the table Cartmel and District won 3-1 at third-placed Galgate on Saturday to set up a final at Giant Axe on April 28 against either Morecambe Royals or Highgrove.
The visitors went straight on the offensive with Carl Davidson’s early effort from 10 yards going just wide after good play from Airey.
It didn’t take long for the first goal however with the pair again linking up for the opener with Davidson heading home.
Despite being second best in the first period Galgate were nearly level at the start of the second half but Steve McMinn’s effort from a corner went over two minutes after the restart.
It was Cartmel who doubled their lead on 50 minutes, Matthew Burrows chipping the advancing Bryan Berry from 20 yards to make it 2-0.
The scoreline was no more than the visitors deserved and Galgate were up against it, McMinn bringing a good save from Kendal with a free-kick on 65 minutes.
The hosts got their lifeline with a quarter of an hour to play, Adam Harding penalised for handball in the area with McMinn making no mistake from the spot to set up a fascinating finale.
Galgate came close to a leveller on 85 minutes but Jamie Fairclough shot agonisingly wide in a goalmouth scramble.
Cartmel went straight on the attack with Joel Drinkall heading home to make sure of victory and book their final date.
