Morecambe boss Jim Bentley expects to be without keeper Barry Roche for around a month after he underwent a knee operation.

Roche came off injured during the pre-match warm-up before the game against Lancaster City last weekend.

It leaves Bentley with only one senior keeper available in Niall Maher while Dan Nizic remains away on international duty.

He said: “Barry’s had an operation on his knee; it’s cartilage so it will be up to four weeks.

“Dan Nizic is still on international duty so he won’t be back until the start of next week.

“It’s not ideal but it’s football and injuries do happen.

“To be fair to Dan he’s doing well on international duty and he’s getting games.

“Baz could have been a lot worse but it’s a minor operation.

“Baz won’t be long and it could be earlier than we expect because he’s a goalkeeper.”

Roche’s absence opens the door for Nizic after the Australian impressed towards the end of last season.

A wrist injury to Roche gave Nizic the chance to start a handful of league games in which he impressed.

“We’ve got big Dan who will back and he did well towards the end of last season,” Bentley said.

“It’s a great opportunity for him now to come in and play the last couple of pre-season games and get his place in the team.

“He’s away on international duty and when he comes back it’s over to him.”
