Megan Doherty scored the only goal for Morecambe Ladies in their entertaining 1-1 draw with City of Manchester at Whalley Range on Sunday.
The boggy pitch prevented Nick Barrett’s side from playing their usual free-flowing football but they started brightly, Melissa Brown working home ‘keeper Stamford a couple of times in the early exchanges.
Doherty also fired a shot just past the post as the visitors pressed for an opener before the poor surface then rendered one effort from the Shrimps ladies’ hotshot tame.
City of Manchester had their moments with Rachel Dunlop having their best opportunity, Standing on the penalty spot she met a cross from Lomas and a crisper shot would have tested Emma Reader but it limped into the keeper’s hands.
Lomas then shot over herself before Doherty battled into the box and tested Stamford with Fish firing the rebound just wide.
The Shrimps were finally ahead in the opening moments of the second half, Nicola Relph finding Doherty who outran Michelle Upton and slipped the ball past the advancing Stamford.
Doherty nearly made it 2-0 five minutes later with a similar move to the opening goal but this time hit the post.
The hosts however were level 20 minutes from time, Dunlop chipping the ball onto the bar and then lunging for the rebound and squeezing the ball in at the far post.
It was an end-to-end finale with Doherty and Brown going close but the Shrimps had to settle for a point.
