Morecambe are asking supporters attending Saturday’s home game with Port Vale to do their bit for the Morecambe Bay Foodbank.

The Shrimps are asking fans to ‘bring a tin’ this afternoon to assist the organisation in the run-up to Christmas.

Members of the foodbank will be at the Globe Arena to take donations and speak to fans about the service they provide.

Shrimps’ co-chairman, Rod Taylor, said the club wants to show its support for vital community projects in the town.

He said: “The Morecambe Bay Foodbank provides a vital service for the town and we want to do what we can to support it especially at this time of year.

“The football club has an important role to play in the community and we want to do all we can to support people in the town who need help and if every supporter brings just one tin to the game we will make a massive difference.”

A spokesperson for The Morecambe Bay Foodbank, said: “More than 90 per cent of the food distributed by foodbanks in The Trussell Trust network is donated by the public – that’s why your food donations are absolutely vital to our ability to give everyone referred to us a balanced and nutritious three day supply of food.

“We always welcome donations and promise to use them to provide help to people in crisis.”

The collection has been organised in conjunction with the Shrimps Trust supporters group.

Stuart Rae from the Trust said: “We are happy to promote the vital work that the Trussell Trust performs within our local community and encourage all Shrimps Trust members to back this fantastic initiative.”

Items particularly wanted are: fruit juice; long life milk; sugar; instant mashed potato; sponge puddings; wrapped biscuits; coffee; pasta sauce; soap and shower gel; toilet roll; toothbrushes and toothpaste; feminine hygiene items; and baby milk.

Anyone who can help out but is unable to attend Saturday’s game can drop off items at the Globe Arena reception instead.
