Morecambe’s Under 18s finished their season with a 1-0 win at Preston North End on Saturday.
Joe Nelligan’s last-minute winner ensured Stewart Drummond and Neil Wainwright’s youngsters completed their Football League Youth Alliance campaign on a high.
It was a sweet moment for under 16 Nelligan who not only lives around the corner from the Globe Arena but also used to play for Preston.
Wainwright was keen to look to the positives as despite finishing bottom of the table the young Shrimps improved on last season.
He said: “It’s been a tough season.
“We’ve beaten our points tally by four points but it could have been even more. There are plenty of games we should have won.
“The performances have been there and we could have been 10 or even 15 points better off.
“There’s been some big positives though with Ben (Hedley) and Niall (Maher) being on the bench for the first team and they are only first years.”
A young Morecambe Reserves side finished the second string season on Tuesday with a 10-0 defeat at Wigan.
