A strong Morecambe side set up a Lancashire Senior Cup clash with Manchester United after knocking Preston out of the competition on penalties on Tuesday.
The Shrimps were winners 3-2 in the shoot-out after a 1-1 draw in normal time of the first round tie at North End’s Springfields training ground.
Richard Brodie put Jim Bentley’s side ahead with a neat finish at the start of the second half before Andy Procter equalised on 69 minutes.
Keammar Daley missed the decisive spot kick in the shoot-out for the home side.
In a repeat of the recent Johnstone’s Paint Trophy clash, both sides fielded players that featured in the tie, with North End, who ran out 4-2 winners in the last meeting, starting the game on the front foot with Andreas Arestidou having an excellent game against his former club.
Brodie gave the Shrimps the lead 10 minutes into the second half firing low past Steve Simonsen.
Preston were level when Chris Beardsley squared for Procter to hammer a shot past Arestidou with just over 20 minutes remaining.
When the game went to penalties Jack King missed for North End before Andy Wright scored to give the Shrimps an early lead.
Arestidiou then blocked Shane Cansdell-Sherriff’s effort before Brodie netted to put Bentley’s side in the driving seat.
David Amoo was first to score for Preston before Simonsen pushed Will Haining’s effort onto the post. Graham Cummins then scored to make it 2-2.
Izak Reid kept his cool for Morecambe meaning Daley had to score to keep the tie alive but he fired over the crossbar as the Shrimps progressed.
Morecambe now face the Red Devils at the Globe Arena at a date and time to be decided.
