The winger was on target just before the hour mark, taking Ryan Winder’s pass before firing beyond Matt Glennon in the Scarborough goal as Phil Brown’s side edged a game low on chances.

After an even opening Craig Carney had the first real sights of goal for the visitors with a fierce shot from a Winder corner charged down midway through the half before a strike from 20 yards was easily held by Glennon.

Then 10 minutes before the ‘break there was nearly an embarrassing moment for Scarborough defender Tom McNamee who saw an overhit backpass go narrowly wide for a City corner.

A heavy deluge then threatened to become the dominant feature of a low-key half with Winder seeing a free-kick go narrowly over in the final action of the opening period.

Brown’s men got their noses in front on 57 minutes with what proved out to be the winning goal.

Winder split the Scarborough central defenders with a fine through ball, releasing Gregory on a diagonal run with the wide man drilling home a low shot from 14 yards.

The game continued to be low on chances as the hosts looked for a way back in the game, skipper Neil Marshall marshalling his troops on his final away day in Dolly Blue.

Glenn Matthews did manage to fire one shot through a packed penalty area and into side netting for the hosts with 15 minutes to play.

Scarborough’s best chances came with nine minutes to play. First stand-in City stopper Dave Rodgerson made an instinctive save to his left to keep out Eddy Birch’s shot from point-blank range before Niall Flint fired the rebound inches wide.

It proved to be decisive for City who made it back-to-back wins in Bridlington and leapfrogged Clitheroe into sixth as they look to finish the season as the best of the rest in the Evo-Stik First Division North.
