Roche believes play-offs are possible

Morecambe goalkeeper Barry Roche says reaching the League 2 play-offs is still a possibility for The Shrimps.

Jim Bentley’s side’s good recent run has all but secured Football League safety meaning supporters are looking up rather than down the table in the final stages of the season.

Roche said: “(Reaching the play-offs) is definitely a possibility, there’s no doubt about that.

“I think we’d have to have an exceptional run of form, but we’ve won five out of our last eight and I had a look at the table the other day and if we won five of our next eight we’d be going into the last couple of games really with something to play for.”

The final run of 10 games begins with a trip to Edgar Davids’ struggling Barnet on Saturday.

The Shrimps stopper said: “They are fighting for their lives but that doesn’t make it any easier.

“If anything that makes it harder, they really, really need the points to get themselves out of trouble.

“Down there on a dodgy pitch, it’s always going to be a tough game.”

Most of the senior players were given the early part of the week off by Bentley but all the talk at the Globe Arena on Thursday was still about Kevin Ellison’s wonder strike in the win over Rochdale, especially from the man himself.

Roche said: “You know what Kev’s like.

“The first thing he said this morning was he’s top of the Sky Sports poll for goal of the week before he even said good morning to everybody.

“It was an unbelievable goal and I doubt we’ll hear the end of it for a long, long time.

“He’s also reminded us this morning that he was sent on when we were in trouble in the game and he rescued us.”
