Newport County are this season’s first League 2 visitors to the Globe Arena this Saturday, August 16, in a 3pm kick-off.

Justin Edinburgh.

Former Tottenham defender guided County back to the Football League for the first time in 25 years in his first full season at the club.

Last season’s 14th-placed finish on their first campaign back represented a decent return.

Key Man

Rene Howe.

A familiar face to Shrimps fans having spent a season on loan with Morecambe in 2008-2009.

Arrived at Newport in January having failed to make his mark with Burton and scored three goals in the second half of last season.

It almost seems too early to be talking about a side’s form but Newport opened the new League 2 season with a 2-0 defeat at home to Wycombe.

Former Accrington man Peter Murphy and Paris Cowan-Hall’s goals shortly before half-time condemned Edinburgh’s side to an opening day defeat.

They are still looking for their first win after a 3-1 defeat at Reading in the Capital One Cup first round on Tuesday night.

The two meetings between the sides on Newport’s return to the Football League last season were the first ever encounters between the clubs with the Shrimps doing the double, winning 3-2 at Rodney Parade in September before a 4-1 win at the Globe Arena in March.

Possible line-up

Pidgeley, Sandell, Jones, Willmott, Feely, Byrne, Minshull, Flynn, Howe, O’Connor, Zebroski.
