LANCASTER City showed their battling qualities on Saturday as they edged out a dogged Prescot Cables side to pick up a vital three points in their hunt for the play-offs.
Highly-rated striker Rhys Turner made the decisive contribution as he was on hand to drive home the only goal of the game seven minutes from time.
City had to work hard on one of league’s less inviting grounds however, playing the closing stages with ten men after substitute Tom Wood went off with what looked like a serious shoulder injury.
Wood’s departure compounded a bad day on the injury front for City after Danny Gregson was ruled out in the warm up with a knee injury.
The first half descended into a war of attrition with both sides coming close to scoring, City ’keeper Martin Fearon had to be at his very best to keep the scores level just before half-time.
Cables themselves had the crossbar to thank for preventing a misdirected defensive header from giving the visitors the lead.
The second half started out in a similar vein, but City were always the more threatening.
As the game entered the final ten minutes the effort put in by both teams began to tell and substitute Zach Clark was having increasing joy down the right while fellow replacement Turner continued to give the home defence problems.
With 83 minutes on the clock, Clark received the ball in midfield and went on a jinking run into the area. He was dispossessed deep in the box and the ball ran loose, but Turner was on it in a flash to give City the lead.
Wood, only minutes after coming off the bench, then went down heavily after a break forward, forcing City to play the game’s final act, which included five minutes of stoppage time, one man short.
Despite the reduced numbers, the Dolly Blues held on to make it four wins and four clean sheets on the bounce heading in to a big promotion battle with Witton Albion at the Giant Axe on Saturday.
