SKIPPER Barry Roche says Morecambe FC’s players must take some responsibility for Sammy McIlroy’s departure.

Roche praised McIlroy and Mark Lillis for their contribution at the club and said he was “gutted’’ to see them leave this week.

Said Roche: “I’m really sorry to see Sammy go because he was great for me.

“He took a chance on me when others wouldn’t and we have always had a great relationship and it was a proud moment when he asked me to be captain.

“At the end of the day the players have let him down and played a major part in the decision and that is disappointing for everyone and he deserved a lot better than he got this year.”

Roche also insisted he has no intention of leaving Morecambe in the summer.
