North Lancashire League: Caton United lift Premier Division title

The village side confirmed their first title since 1996 with a 4-1 win over Trimpell and Bare Rangers last Wednesday night.

Needing just a point to seal the championship in their final game of the season a brace from Liam Moffatt and goals from Nathan Jackson and Phil Eccleston made sure there were to be no slip ups.

Sam Sandham was on target for the visitors.

The only team who could have caught Caton were Cartmel and District but they went down 3-2 at Bowerham on the same night with the Lancaster side getting the win they needed to stave off the threat of relegation.

An own goal and strikes from Tom Spencely and Andrew Doggart also condemned College AFC to relegation to Division One.

Joel Drinkall and Tom Airey scored for Cartmel.

Carnforth Rangers are now the favourites to finish as runners-up after a 4-3 win over Marsh United on Saturday.

A 1-1 draw between the sides just a week earlier had cost Rangers their chance at the title and the return game was fast and furious.

Ryan Greenland, Damien Murphy and Alec Benson with two including the winner scored for Carnforth. Two good goals from Aaron McFaden and Joe Pollard made sure the result was always in doubt.

Galgate’s chances of second were dealt a serious blow by Morecambe Royals who won 3-1 on Saturday for their sixth victory in a row.

The Royals deservedly took the lead in the 28th minute when Dan Broadley was given space and his shot from 25 yards flew into the net giving the ‘keeper no chance.

The Morecambe side doubled their lead just three minutes later when Steve Howley rose unmarked to head the ball home from a corner.

The second half was then just two minutes old when the Galgate keeper was adjudged to have tripped Broadley in the area with the leading scorer picking himself up to make it 3-0.

Steven Stirzaker scored a late consolation for Galgate.
